Rubrics is one of the main ways I asses students understanding. Often times I am assessing more than one outcome so it makes it easy to put it all in to a large grid from the students to see. It is also a good tool to use before the assignment is given out. This way the students know what they need to do to get an EG (exceeding grade level). Rubrics are laid out in a way the my class knows exactly what I expect from the assignment. Here is an example from a current assignment we are working on in Science.

One of my students favourite way to integrate technology into the classroom is to use Kahoot.
They ask at the end of every unit if I can make a Kahoot to review the main ideas. https://getkahoot.com/ We have been finding that in math we will often give the same test for everyone in the class. For the kids that need a little extra support they will be given a reader to keep them focused and open up some lines of communication for them. We will also take questions out so they have fewer to answer or less steps they will need to complete.
Here is a copy of my year plan chart from the beginning of the year. If I have learned anything from the beginning of the year is that things do not always go as planned. At the end of September we quickly realized that our class was not doing very well learning two different topics in both LA and Math. So from there we decided we needed to get on the same page so the students were not needing to switch back and forth day to day. Doing this put us back in our year plan a little bit but the success we started to see in our students showed us it was the right decision. In our plans we set aside June to be our review month for PAT's and now that it is almost here we still have some curriculum we need to cover before we can start our PAT prep. I think the biggest thing I have learned this year is I need to be flexible and roll with the punches. As a teacher you can be planned to the minute and depending on the day it may or may not happen. And that's okay. For our last round of PBL this year, the grade 6 students had to complete the scientific method with an experiment of their choosing. Here are some pictures from one groups experiment. They were trying to determine which type of candy created the most cotton candy. They needed to identify all elements of the scientific method and ensure it was a fair test. Along with these pictures they created a tri-fold, and google presentation with videos from their experiment. Kindness club initiated an activity in the school where everyone in the class had a hand pinned to their back. Everyone walked around and wrote one positive thing about that person. Giving them a "pat on the back". Here is a picture of mine.
It has been crucial to build good relationships with every student in my class. Seeing the kind words shows that I have been building positive relationships with my class. Earlier this month we wrote our first PAT for the year. I was a little nerve wracking for me as well as the class. They were all very anxious to write their first one. We had done a lot of preparation and practice to make sure they were as ready as they were going to be. I was very proud of how they did overall. Many of my students had done their best piece of writing. Here are two excellent examples from my students. They took an idea from the picture prompt and created two great stories.
