KSA D- Subject DisciplineMy teaching assignment for the 2016/2017 school year is in a grade 6 home room. I am part time so the subjects I am responsible for are science and health. I share language arts, physical education, and math.
Sharing a classroom requires a lot of communication and preparation to make sure there is little that changes day to day with having two teachers. We have altered our year plans and teaching in order to make it the most engaging and beneficial for our students. |
KSA E - Student LearningIn my grade 6 class we have a wide range or abilities. I have done my best to differentiate through tiered assessments, providing extra time and allowing readers when necessary. Throughout the year we have had different CRM meetings which let us focus on different high needs students and make them our focus. I found that any time the students were more actively engaged: doing labs/experiments, using technology, or creating something. They were often more successful and gained a better understanding of their learning

KSA F - PlanningAll of my planning has been with Understanding by Design in mind. Whether it is short range planning all the way to my unit plans. I look at the outcomes in the program of studies in order to make my assignments and assessments. I have been so lucky to have such a supportive grade level team, and staff. They have shared so much with me which is amazing as a first year teacher! Here is an example of a final unit exam for Flight

KSA GH - Classroom Culture and Relationships.
Sharing a classroom with my teaching partner has been a really great experience. We have spent a lot of time developing trust and respect in our classroom. At the beginning of the year we created a list of things that they thought a classroom should look like, sound like, and feel like. After we collected all their ideas we discussed and combined them to create a class room mission. At the end of every day we do a hug, handshake, or high five just to make sure they leave knowing that we care and are there for them. First thing Monday mornings we spend of a few minutes sharing about our weekends and getting to know each other a little bit better. Having set aside time just to get to know more about them really helps to build those relationships with each student.

KSA K- Student Assessment
We try to incorporate many different types of assessment, both formative and summative. Observation and discussion makes up the majority of the formative assessment and is something I do everyday to check in with my class. Summative assessments can be anything from a unit test (multiple choice, short, answer), to a picture prompt narrative story, or a presentation on Google Slides. I try to incorporate many different styles of assessment because the students all have different strengths. Although many of my unit tests have been multiple choice in order to better prepare my class for their PAT's at the end of the year.

KSA J- Teaching and Learning Technologies
I try to incorporate technology into the classroom as often as I can or at least give it as an option. I like to give the students the choice whether they can complete something on the Chromebook (Google Slide, Google Doc) or do it by hand. Technology can be a very powerful tool and the students ability to use it is going to be crucial as they move on in their lives. My class loves getting to do a Kahoot when reviewing for unit exams!
