I am just about to finish up my first week in PSII and need to assign grades to my two classes. The P.E. programs is a module based program. At the beginning of the semester students get to choose what activities they want to be apart of. It is great that the students get a choice but becomes difficult when you need to assign a grade after 5 days. P.E assessments tend to be a bit subjective because there are so many students in the class and the teacher is not able to see what is going on with every student every class. I do not want the grade I give them to be a surprise so I need to continue building relationships. Next week I am going to focus on building these relationships and keeping students up to date with their assessments. If a student is not showing me their skill level, activley participating, or creating a safe environment their marks will refelct their actions. As the teacher I should give them the opportunity to improve mid week if I feel they are not going to meet the expectations of the class. Keeping the students involved in their marks will help both me and the students when it comes to report cards. The students will know what I expect because I have

Today was my third day in PSII and I decided to incorporate some technology into the class. I feel as though in high school there are groups of students that want to work together all of the time, and when you seperate them they are unhappy with you. So, to try and avoid this I wanted to make the choosing of teams as random as possible. This is where I incorporated my iPad. I downloaded an app called "team shake". This app allows me to create teams quickly and at random. The other nice thing about the app is you can get the app to consider sex of the student as well as skill level if you want to distinguish teams that way. Team shake allows you to take attendance. If a student is marked absent they will not be incorporated into the teams.
This week we are playing tchoukball and after yesterdays class I felt as though the students were not able to visualize what the actual game looks like. Today I was able to play a video on my iPad so the class was able to see the speed and strategy the sport needs to be more engaging. Tomorrow is my first day of PSII and to be honest I am pretty nervous. This is my first time teaching at the older level and it feels pretty intimidating. I have very large class sizes that change every week. I do not feel that I am going to have enough time to build close relationships. Student modules change every week and are different for each class/grade. I am also teaching a multitude of different sports over the short time I am there. I am trying to get as much organized this week as I can so I can be prepared as possible.
This practicum will be a great test for me but I am willing and up for the challenge. One of my goals for this practicum was to become more familiar with sports and the best ways to teach skills and strategies. I have been given the opportunity to teach or assistant in 17 different sports over the six weeks I am there. What better way to meet that goal then to be given so much experience. My second goal is classroom management. I felt as though I had really good classroom management techniques in PSI but I think it is going to be very different this time around. I will need to focus very hard on learning their names within the first day or two of every module so I can best build those relationships with my students that I may only have for 5 days. I think to be successful at classroom management I will need to have engaging lessons followed by a rapport with the students. I want to build relationships with the students so they are respectful of me and the gym space. Outside of the classroom my goal as a preservice teacher is to continue to develop my online portfolio and my digital presence. I am going to continue blogging throughout my PSII expereince. I want to link my lesson plans that went well and others that may not have. I want to learn as much as I can over the next couple of weeks and hope to document that here. If you have any helpful tips please feel free to leave comments. Wish me luck! |
