Over the past school year I have really found how instrumental it is to make sure you develop genuine relationships with your students. I have devoted time every day to get to know my students a little better. The result is that my students trust me, are willing to share things with me, and are respectful in the classroom. This helps with classroom management and helps when there is a problem in the classroom because we can come back from the blow up and make it better. I have also found that keeping parents in the loop as often as possible shows the students that we are all one united front trying to ensure we get their best. Parent involvement also helps shine a light on different behaviours in the classroom. I want every single one of students to leave at that end of the year know that I care about them. The only way to make sure that is the case is to put in the time throughout the year.

In December we started a basic fact math program for multiplication. The students earn belts like in karate after they complete 4 pages of 60 multiplication questions. Our class is so excited about it and love to practice their basic facts. We have a huge level of engagement and our students have vastly improved over the past 4 months.
Here are two exams that I used for Flight. They are focused on the SLE for Grade 6 Science. I also incorporated some PAT level questions so they are able to get that exposure before they have to write in June. I have two exams because I have a few students that I have modified for. The modified tests include simpler language and fewer questions but still meet the same overarching learning outcomes.
One focus at our school is Project Based Learning. Each grade gets the opportunity to do three rounds of PBL. Each project is about three weeks long and the students are given a driving question and they need to create a project around that. So far the Grade 6 has completed two rounds. The first was centered around Evidence and Investigation where they needed to develop a crime scene and develop evidence that suits their crime. The second was around establishing a healthy lifestyle. The second one was left pretty open for the students to decide what direction to take. We had many that chose to do healthy eating, some tackled mental health and wellness, while others looked at physical activity. Students were able to work with other classes and collaborate in new groups. We had many groups create Google presentations or videos to show their understanding, and some groups developed their own cookbook. It is amazing to see how creative and purposeful so many presentations were. For the second round of PBL students were assessed on their ability to work collaboratively, as well if they understood and explained why it is important to live a healthy lifestyle. This project really brought the school culture together as we were intermixing all grade 6 classes. It was extraordinary to watch them develop and create together.
